US Senators Reinforce Warning on Interference in Brazil
Three Democratic lawmakers sent a direct message to the US State Department, asking the Trump administration to avoid any action that could affect the presidential elections scheduled for October 2026 in Brazil.
The correspondence, delivered on Monday (28), was signed by Jeanne Shaheen, Peter Welch and Tim Kaine and addressed to Secretary Marco Rubio.
Concerns about External Pressure
The senators express fear that Washington is applying diplomatic, economic and political measures to weaken Brazilian institutions before the election. They cite the use of tariffs and sanctions in the summer of 2025 as an attempt to influence the Supreme Court's decision in the case involving former President Jair Bolsonaro.
Another point highlighted is the appointment of Darren Beattie to a position dealing with Brazilian affairs, a position the lawmakers consider inappropriate.
Meeting in the Oval Office and Regional Pattern
The letter mentions the recent meeting between Donald Trump and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro as a sign of political involvement. The senators compare the current stance with that adopted by the US in the previous election and point to a pattern of interference in countries like Argentina, Honduras and Colombia.
Questions to the Secretary
The three lawmakers demand clear answers:
- How does the State Department coordinate democracy and human rights objectives with regional partners?
- Does the American government commit to accepting the certified result of the 2026 elections and maintaining normal relations with the winner?
The document reinforces that actions that undermine confidence in the Brazilian electoral process may harm the bilateral relationship between the two countries.
