STF Decision Opens Space for Clubs
Minister Luiz Fux of the Federal Supreme Court accepted Flamengo's request to join three Direct Actions of Unconstitutionality discussing the future of betting houses in Brazil. With the inclusion, the Rio de Janeiro club will be able to defend the immediate suspension of the effects of the Provisional Measure signed by President Lula.
Reasons for Urgency
Flamengo argues that the National Congress will take time to analyze the matter and that, in this interval, the damages will already be irreversible. The sudden ban on sponsorships, according to the club, threatens modalities that do not generate enough own revenue and puts at risk the preparation of athletes for the 2028 Olympic Games.
- Medalist athletes and young prospects depend on the structure maintained with these resources.
- The ten-day deadline to remove brands and ads is considered unfeasible, as it involves already sold uniforms and scheduled broadcasts.
Financial Impact on Football
The red-and-black board estimates losses of up to R$ 430 million for Flamengo alone. Nationally, the damage could reach R$ 2.5 billion. The club also warns that the measure encourages migration to clandestine platforms instead of ending betting.
Unprecedented Position Among Teams
So far, Flamengo is the first club to directly enter the STF to contest the government decision. Other clubs had only expressed themselves through statements and a boycott of meetings at the Ministry of Sports.
