Starting in September 2027, high school education in Russia will undergo a major update with the entry into force of the new federal education standard. The focus is on allowing students to use artificial intelligence tools, build more flexible learning paths and study all subjects at a basic level.
Class hours remain stable
The total volume of classes for the final two years of high school ranges between 2,312 and 2,516 hours, without exceeding 37 hours per week. Each school may choose a five- or six-day schedule. The new document revised the contents of mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology with an emphasis on practical applications and updates according to recent scientific advances.
Traditional values and teamwork
The standard incorporates guidelines from presidential decree No. 809, which reinforces values such as collectivism. Among the expected outcomes, students must demonstrate the ability to work in groups and take responsibility for their actions.
Six profiles and greater freedom of choice
The six training profiles remain: natural-scientific, agrotechnological, humanistic, technological, socioeconomic and universal. Within each profile, schools may create specialized classes, such as medicine or computer science. For the first time, it will be possible to take all subjects only at the basic level, without the obligation to deepen two subjects.
Students will also be able to combine subjects from different profiles through individual plans. This flexibility allows, for example, a student in the technological profile to deepen biology while classmates follow the standard curriculum.
Artificial intelligence enters the classroom
The new standard explicitly authorizes the use of AI to search for information and achieve practical results. In the computer science component, students will learn to apply AI tools in various situations, understanding their ethical limits and information security. It will not be necessary to acquire new textbooks; the current material already allows greater focus on practical activities.
Equipment and infrastructure
Schools under construction will follow the specifications of the new standard for equipment purchases. Existing institutions will have until 2030 to adapt through a national modernization program.
