Lula Approves Landmark Law Transforming the Future of Women's Football in Brazil

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sanctioned Law 15.522/2026 on Monday, placing women's football at the center of Brazilian sports policies. The ceremony took place at the Brasília Air Base and marks an important advance for the modality.

Key advances of the legislation

The text, sent to Congress in September 2025, requires the Ministry of Sport to create a calendar of matches in suitable stadiums and encourage partnerships with schools, universities and clubs to discover new talents. The law also reinforces the right to sport, equal opportunities and protection for athletes during pregnancy and maternity.

Obligations for clubs and SAFs

From the sanction onward, the General Sports Law requires sports organizations to maintain a women's team. Clubs have 180 days to adapt, with the possibility of an equal extension. In addition, Football Anonymous Societies may adjust their projects to prioritize the training of players.

Preparation for the 2027 World Cup

The new rule also requires the preparation of a legacy plan for the Women's World Cup, which Brazil will host in 2027. The project must cover social, sporting and financial aspects, aligning with national strategies for developing the modality.

With this measure, the government seeks to reduce historical inequalities and prepare the country to host the global tournament with fairer structures and opportunities for the athletes.
