President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva approved on Monday (28) Law No. 15.522, which sets national and lasting guidelines for the advancement of women's football in the country. The measure comes at a strategic moment, with Brazil hosting the Women's World Cup in 2027.
Commitment to equality
During the sanction, Lula highlighted the need to guarantee equal space for women in all areas, including sports. “There is no reason for women to be treated in an inferior way”, said the president.
New requirements for clubs
From now on, entities that train athletes must also maintain women's teams. Organizations dedicated to women's football now have the same rights and benefits already granted to men's teams. In addition, those who want to become a SAF will need to invest in the training of players, being able to focus only on the women's side.
Responsibilities of the Ministry of Sports
The ministry must:
- Encourage the participation of girls in grassroots categories
- Strengthen competitions at all ages
- Support the creation and maintenance of professional teams
- Create protocols against racism, prejudice and violence in sports
- Encourage partnerships between schools, universities and clubs
- Train women in refereeing, management and technical direction
Legacy of the 2027 World Cup
The law also provides for the preparation of a social, sporting and financial legacy plan linked to the Women's World Cup, which will be held between June 24 and July 25, 2027 in the cities of Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Fortaleza, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and São Paulo.
