Tense atmosphere marks first direct confrontation
The debate broadcast by TV Globo this Tuesday highlighted the unpopularity of Governor Cláudio Castro and the political instability in Rio. Eduardo Paes (PSD), the frontrunner in the polls, sought to link Douglas Ruas (PL) to the current state administration, while his opponent presented himself as Flávio Bolsonaro's representative in the state.
Exchanges of accusations between the main candidates
Moments of greatest tension arose between Paes and Ruas, who mutually accused each other of involvement by allies and relatives in alleged crimes. Moderator Ana Paula Araújo had to intervene to calm the audience after insults and boos in the studio. Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere (PSD) even shouted at Ruas.
Ruas questioned the presence of Pedro Paulo (PSD) on Paes's ticket, citing old domestic violence allegations already acquitted by the STF. Paes responded by highlighting convictions against Ruas's brother, councilor Nelsinho Ruas, for assault and shooting at a police officer.
Criticism of ties to the state government
Paes exploited Castro's impeachment and Rodrigo Bacellar's arrest to associate Ruas with the former president of Alerj. Ruas countered by mentioning social encounters between Paes and Castro, while Paes recalled Ruas's explicit support for the governor in previous elections.
Strategy to attract Bolsonaro voters
Ruas highlighted amendments from Flávio Bolsonaro for studies on Metro Line 3 and defended the senator against criticism from other candidates. Paes avoided national polarization, prioritizing local issues and keeping distance from direct mentions of Lula or Bolsonaro.
Other candidates pressure Ruas
Garotinho (Republicanos) accused Ruas of appearing on alleged lists linked to Bacellar and mocked his trajectory in the Civil Police. William Siri (PSOL) demanded a stance on ending the 6x1 work schedule, while Ruas replied that he supports changes without harming employers. André Marinho (Novo) criticized the political system as a whole.
Priority to Rio amid divisions
Paes reinforced the discourse of placing the state above federal disputes, balancing allies from different spectra. The debate highlighted the difficulty candidates face in distancing themselves from controversial figures in the state scenario.
