United States President Donald Trump signed a decree on Tuesday that officially replaces the expression artificial intelligence with "superintelligence" (SI) in all federal government documents and communications.
The measure expands the series of renamings promoted by the president, who had already suggested changing geographic names such as the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario.
Terminology change
From now on, agencies and departments must abandon the terms AI and artificial intelligence in official correspondence, public policies and non-legislative materials. The presidential advisor for Science and Technology will be tasked with drafting a federal definition that highlights the innovative nature of the technology.
The decree argues that the new name better reflects the tool's potential to expand human creativity and generate advances previously considered impossible.
Unexpected effect in Slovenia
The decision triggered a sudden increase in demand for domains with the .si extension, the European country's code. The Register.si agency recorded an average of 3,700 new addresses per day, compared to 3,500 throughout August.
By Tuesday, the total exceeded 220,000 registrations. The acronym SI coincides exactly with the Slovenian national domain, which sparked interest from companies and investors.
The entity's spokesperson, Klara Herman, confirmed the steady growth and recommended that trademark and slogan owners register their domains as soon as possible.
Context of the decision
Trump had already defended the change during the UN General Assembly, stating that the term artificial intelligence sounds fake. The decree comes after a meeting with executives from major technology companies and reinforces the intention to position the United States as a leader in this area.
