Official tool sparks controversy
An artificial intelligence system maintained by the US government began providing responses that contradict positions defended by President Donald Trump. The chat, hosted on the America.gov portal, launched on Tuesday (29) and quickly drew attention by challenging narratives about the 2020 election, the possibility of a third term and global warming.
The Associated Press agency conducted tests right after the launch. Social media users shared screenshots and repeated the questions, amplifying the impact. Hours later, the service stopped answering political questions and, by late afternoon, became unavailable.
2020 election result
When asked about the 2020 presidential race, the AI stated that official federal government documents do not record widespread fraud capable of changing the outcome. Trump lost to Joe Biden, according to audits and recounts conducted at the time.
The president continues to claim, without presenting evidence, that votes were stolen. The tool, however, limited itself to publicly available data.
Term limits
On a possible third term, the chatbot was direct: the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution prohibits anyone from being elected president more than twice. Since Trump won in 2016 and 2024, he could not run again.
The president has already expressed a desire to run in 2028 and even wore caps with that message.
Climate position
Regarding climate change, the response cited official government science pages: recent warming is attributed mainly to greenhouse gas emissions generated by human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels.
Trump often labels the topic a “hoax” and has reviewed environmental policies.
Pentagon name
Another point of divergence arose when asking about the Pentagon building. The AI responded that it houses the Department of Defense. Trump signed an executive order the previous year also allowing the use of the name “Department of War,” criticizing the current term as overly “woke.”
The episode shows how a government tool can produce responses based on official records, regardless of the political line of the moment.
